Technology and learning development

We discussed in class the importance of non-verbal cues and discussed the impact adolescence has on learning development (see below). We also talked about how technology can negatively impact social development because our focus is  removed from everything else.

So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one element of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. Then go online and find an article that supports or negates your position and give us a brief summary of what the article states.

For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying. The article I found talks about how 75% of students using cell phones in class are performing worse than those without. https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/04/do-smartphones-have-a-place-in-the-classroom/480231/

Please include a link to your source in the comment as demonstrated in the example above.

  2. During Middle Adolescence, we use social media and our phones as a way to communicate with others online, however, it cuts off our social skills in real life, which could make us anti-social and not want to talk to anyone in real life. I found an article that says that nearly 2/3 of teenagers say that they make new friends through social media and 90% use social media as a way to connect with existing off-line friendships every day.

  4. During adolescence many teens decide to listen to music while studying, but there is an unknown factor, whether you should or shouldn't. From the source I found I was able to see that listening to music while studying helps improve memory, attention, and reduces levels of anxiety and depression. But, there are cons like getting distracted or having difficulty with multitasking. Apparently, it comes down to the type of person someone is and the complexity of the task to be done.

  5. I think that cell phones could benefit a school's environment especially incase of emergency. "More than 1 in 10 kids between the ages of 6 to 10 already have their own cell, according to data collected during the first six months of 2012 by YouthBeat," says that since most students have phones they should use them for example if an intruder comes in and you could send out a text or call to the people in school or call the police. The website I used for additional information is the link below.

  6. I believe that it is beneficial for students to have their phones during school while they are in their Middle Adolescents stage. My reasoning for this belief is that there are many different applications on the phone that can be used to help improve study habits and schedule issues. Students can keep track of what classes they have, or what assignments are due on calendar apps and even school apps such as PowerSchool. I feel like by the time someone is between the ages of 14 and 18 they have more control over what they do. So by having this sense of control, it may prevent them from being on their device for no purpose. Rather than having it during class when you’re 11-13 wanting to play games and record your friends making funny faces in class. Another reason I think students should be able to have their phones on them is in case of an emergency. Sadly, in this day and age school emergencies and disasters happen often but not too often. I think a student should be able to contact a family member in this case so they can get help from outside and so they know what is happening. Especially if, God forbid, it was something serious such as a school shooting. Here is a link that supports my claims and beliefs: https://kwikboost.com/k-12-students-should-have-access-to-cell-phones.

  7. During Middle Adolescence teens can use their phones in class to teach responsibility. In school you can use your phone for assignments and projects instead of playing games. You can also keep your phone on silent if you tend to get a lot of notifications. https://kwikboost.com/k-12-students-should-have-access-to-cell-phones/

  8. During Middle Adolescence, the worries about being considered popular grows stronger during this stage. " these media-related activities comprise roughly 6–9 h of an American youth’s day, excluding home- and schoolwork" It shows that allowing phones may make people immediately go on social media as it is one of the most things that people use all the time. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5821838/

  9. During Middle Adolescence, teens can use their phones in class to gain "access to tools and apps that can help them complete and stay on top of their class work." Also, teachers can incorporate digital platforms into lessons to make work fun for teens. "Using social media can keep students interested in class and encourage them to participate in the discussion. Some teachers create twitter hashtags or message boards students can use during class discussions to share thoughts and ideas. This can be especially helpful for students who might not be comfortable speaking in class." https://www.oxfordlearning.com/should-cell-phones-be-allowed-classrooms/

  10. During Middle Adolescence, people are usually driven to make more friends and become more social. Being on your phone in school allows for this to happen. When on your phone, you can do group collaborations. Group collaborations allow for you to meet new people and get to know them a lot better. You may meet some of your greatest friends because of this. In the article I found, it states that by using their phones, students can collaborate withe their fellow classmates and even people in different schools. This can be beneficial to those who may be shy in person but feel like they can be themselves by communicating through the internet. https://cellphones.lovetoknow.com/Pros_of_Cell_Phones_in_School

  11. During the period of Middle Adolescence people are usually striving to make more friends and try to become popular. But also to keep constant contact with each other. That can lead to spending too much time on your phone which can cause constant fatigue and stress. But it can also lead to being obsessed with your phone. "Teenagers who excessively use their cell phone are more prone to disrupted sleep, restlessness, stress and fatigue." This can end up to impact peoples studies and the ability to pay attention during class which can affect your grades and your life. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/06/080609071402.htm

  12. During Middle Adolescence, teenagers start to become more attached to their phones. Simply because everyone else is using their phones for social media. And this disrupts their education inside and outside of school. Research shows "Students (average age 18) in a simulated classroom reveals how phones hurt learning, as students who did not use their phones “wrote down 62 percent more information in their notes, took more detailed notes, were able to recall more detailed information from the lecture, and scored a full letter grade and a half higher on a multiple choice test than those students who were actively using their mobile phones.” Students who don't use their phones seem to be more productive than students who do. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/why-phones-dont-belong-in-school_b_9666730

  14. During Middle Adolescence, teenagers should be allowed to have access to their phones. There are multiple reasons, as well as, evidence in which supports this statement. One reason, for example, would be the dangers and hazards of this time period. Unfortunately, there are a lot of crimes and shootings going around. And if you were not able to have access to your phone, you wouldn't be able to call for help nor defend yourself. Not everyone is trained to protect themselves so we use social media as a defense to protect ourselves from danger. If you were to be present during a school shooting, your phone would be useful because you would be able to either call for help or convey a message secretly. Aside from the hazards of today's age, one important reason students should be allowed to have access to their phones is to provide students with a sense of responsibility. As students age, they realize the importance of apps such as the calendar app and you tend to put your priorities first. Unlike younger students in which have not quite matured yet, so they play video games. Students would be able to use their phones for educational purposes instead of foolish ones. All in all, students should be allowed to have access to their phones during Middle Adolescence.

  15. Middle Adolescence has shifted from a time where teens would go outside and play, to now, where they would rather stay inside and be on their phones. It's a struggle to look up from your device for a couple of minutes, let alone a whole school day. Teens should not have phones in school, since they are disruptive to the students learning, and to their classmates. Having your eyes glued to a smartphone all day prevents a student from fully unlocking their potential. Another thing that prohibits this is the lack of sleep the teen is getting. Being on your phone all through the night eats up valuable sleep time, which is another reason why students can't concentrate in class.
